The Hebrew Aleph-Bet

Hebrew reads right to left and has 22 letters — all consonants. Vowels are indicated by small dots and dashes called "nikkudot." Learning even a few letters opens the scripture like never before.

Biblical Hebrew — Key Words & Roots

Hebrew is not just a language — it's a theology. Each root word carries layers of meaning that deepen how you read and understand Scripture.

שָׁלוֹם
Shalom
Peace / Wholeness / Completeness

Far more than the absence of conflict — shalom describes a state of total wholeness, health, and harmony. It is the deepest greeting and the ultimate blessing.

Genesis 26:29 · Numbers 6:26 · Isaiah 9:6
חֶסֶד
Hesed
Lovingkindness / Steadfast Love / Mercy

One of the richest words in Scripture — hesed describes God's covenantal loyalty and unfailing love. Often untranslatable in a single English word.

Psalm 23:6 · Lamentations 3:22 · Micah 6:8
אֱמוּנָה
Emunah
Faith / Faithfulness / Steadiness

Rooted in the word for "firm" or "steady" — Biblical faith is not blind belief but a grounded trust in the character of God. Shares its root with "Amen."

Habakkuk 2:4 · Proverbs 12:17 · Isaiah 25:1
קָדוֹשׁ
Kadosh
Holy / Set Apart / Other

To be holy is to be set apart — distinct, consecrated, different. Used of God, his Name, his people, places like Jerusalem, and objects like the Sabbath.

Isaiah 6:3 · Leviticus 11:44 · Psalm 99:3
דָּבָר
Davar
Word / Matter / Thing

In Hebrew thought, a word is not merely spoken — it accomplishes something. God's davar creates, commands, and cannot return void. The Ten Commandments are the "Ten Davars."

Isaiah 55:11 · Genesis 1 · Exodus 20:1
תְּשׁוּבָה
Teshuvah
Repentance / Return / Turning

The Hebrew concept of repentance is a physical turning — not merely feeling sorry, but changing direction. To repent is literally to "return" to God.

Joel 2:12 · Malachi 3:7 · Jeremiah 3:12
בְּרִית
Berit
Covenant / Agreement / Bond

The backbone of the entire Biblical narrative. God's covenants with Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David are not contracts — they are binding relationships sealed in blood.

Genesis 15 · Exodus 24:8 · Jeremiah 31:31
בְּרֵאשִׁית
Bereshit
In the beginning

The very first word of Scripture — and the Hebrew name of the book of Genesis. "In the beginning" — but the Hebrew also carries the sense of "in the head" or "in the chief place."

Genesis 1:1 · John 1:1
